The Dodge City Hot Wheels Smack Down 2 – Description and Rules

Cars ready to race on Dunsmuir Ave. in front of the Waverley Hotel

INTRODUCTION

Trondy and Coal Hills Raceway is stoked to host the second Dodge City Hot Wheels Smack Down tournament, an online race series that pits aspiring diecast car racers against each other on the streets of Dodge and the No. 6 Mine for laughs and prizes. This is a local tournament to raise donations for the Cumberland Food Shed, a valuable and critical resource for our community. Interested racers who live too far away to drop off a donation in Cumberland are invited to join us for an international tournament coming later this year, which will have no entry fee or donation requirements.

Unlike last year when we raced 32 cars, this year we’ll only race 16. Also unlike last year, there will be no preregistration. Instead, an unlimited amount of contestants may enter to race, but only the fastest 16 move on to the series. Those that fail to qualify will still get to watch their cars race in an exhibition race against other non-qualifiers.

Car entry deadline: 9pm, Saturday April 15, 2023

Races will air on the Coal Hills Diecast Racing YouTube channel April 27, 2023.

RULES AND RESTRICTIONS

Eligibility
Anyone who can make it to Cumberland to drop off a car at Coal Hills HQ and a food donation at the Cumberland food shed is welcome. Exception: three out of towners from last year’s tourney have been grandfathered in and are allowed to submit a car by mail this year. They will make donations to their local food banks.

Limit 1 entry per person.

No proxy sign-ups allowed. You cannot sign-up anyone other than yourself. This is to ensure fair representation.

Car stuff

  • Stock and modified cars will all race together in a single class (last year’s overall winner was a stock car).
  • Maximum dimensions: 3.25in. long x 2in. tall x 1.25in. wide. (Must fit on standard orange Hot Wheels Track)
  • 60.0g maximum weight.
  • Retail axles and plastic wheels only. Polishing axles allowed.
  • Dry lube only.
  • NO moving parts allowed, such as hoods, doors, trunks, etc. All moving parts MUST be glued down except wheels of course!
  • The body can be repainted with custom paint scheme.
  • No offensive graphics or markings eg. Confederate flags, swastikas, etc. I reserve the right to disqualify any vehicle that is offensive or not family friendly.

Qualifying
Each submitted car will race twice alone, once from each lane, and it’s fastest time will stand. The fastest 16 cars will race in the series. Qualifying will not be broadcast.

Race format, scoring and special rules
Races will be running in a standard 16-car bracket with 4 cars participating in each race, each race taking four laps with cars changing starting positions every lap. The 2 winning cars from each race will advance to the next round through to the finals. Bracket seeding based on lap times. Race host has final decision in all races.

Cars will score points based on how they finish each lap:
1st Place – 5 points
2nd Place – 3 points
3rd place – 2 points
4th Place – 1 point
Did Not Finish (DNF) – 0 points

In the case of a quadruple DNF, the lap will be rerun once. If that lap is also a quadruple DNF, all cars will receive zero points and the race will continue to it’s next lap.

If there is a tie in the end, the two cars will have a race off, best of 3 races. Pole position for the first race is determined by best qualifying time. Cars will change lanes each lap.

Cars don’t have to be on their wheels when they cross the finish line, but some part of the car has to cross the line.

Dates & deadlines
All entries must be received by the host by the end of the day (9pm) on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Qualifying and racing is scheduled to begin immediately after so if you do not make the deadline, your car will not race. No exceptions will be made.

The first episode of the weekly 7-episode series will be be broadcast April 27th on the Coal Hills Diecast Racing YouTube channel.
